A truly unique locality with the extinct bush covered volcanic cone of Mt Te Tapui (scenic reserve) in close proximity to the west. The Kaimai Ranges lie to the East, Mt Te Aroha to the North and Mt Maungatautiri to the South. The surrounding farmland on the rolling hills hosts a mixture of drystock and dairy farms, while closer to Matamata there are many renowned thoroughbred horse studs and agistment properties.
The entrance to Wildwood Grove is at 356 Henry Watson Road approximately 10 minutes drive from Matamata.
Leaving Matamata on Station Road you travel west to the Matai Road intersection and turn left onto Matai Road, then first right onto Henry Watson Road.
Economy & Infrastructure
Farming produces the largest proportion of the regions wealth with dairying and drystock farms on the easy hill country and flat land around Matamata. Bloodstock properties and arable cropping farms feature on the flat land immediately adjacent to Matamata with a smattering of hoticultural properties as well. Matamata is predominately a rural service centre but features both light and heavy manufacturing industries and a host of popular cafes. The Hobbiton movie set is a 15 minute bus ride away and is a frequent stop off for tourists from all over the world.
Facilities & Activities
Matamata has several primary schools, an intermediate school and a medium sized college that serves both Matamata residents and those from the outlying rural areas. Buses also travel daily to St. Peters School in Cambridge and Bethleham School in Tauranga. There are ample retail stores including a large modern supermarket and fast food outlets to complement the host of high quality cafes. There are four service stations a local volunteer fire brigade and all the hardware and engineering facilities you are likely to require. Matamata has many sporting clubs and Saturday is a busy day with school and local sporting competitions.

The Te Tapui scenic reserve is around 2 kms to the west; featuring the bush covered mountains of Te Tapui and Maungakawa. A walking track takes you to the top of Maungakawa in approximately an hour with views from the trig tower north toward Morrinsville, east to Te Aroha and the Kaimai Ranges and west to Mount Maungatautiri.
Lake Karapiro is 15 minutes by car to the south for water skiing, wakeboarding, rowing, kayaking, trout fishing or just lazing by the water in the summer sun.
Schools in the region
There are several primary schools in and around Matamata, Matamata Intermediate School and Matamata College all featured in the link below. In addition there are several high quality independant schools in nearby Hamilton, Cambridge and Tauranga; buses run daily to these and some have boarding facilities.
